Principal of Summer School
I would like to deliver a short speech reflecting the importance of grit and perseverance. We are graduating 20 students at the end of this week from a summer school setting in which students needed to take a class (or two) to meet state requirements for graduation. These students failed a class late in their senior year or have been working to get caught up on credits missed early in their high school career. I would like the speech to be 3-5 minutes long.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
I have a first draft speech for you below. I hope you have some real details to add such as about the characters in the class, some teamwork they showed, and perhaps a word or two about the great teachers. Let me know what you think and if you would like more help.
Honored Guests, Families and Class of 2016
Congratulations Class of 2016, you really do deserve this Graduation Day.
Each person here has their own good reasons for requiring extra schooling. The reasons do not matter in the end, what does matter is that you seized your opportunity. For some people summer school can seem like a punishment for not doing well, for others it can feel very inconvenient when friends and family are enjoying every minute of their summer break. Unfortunately a number of students find it too much and they drop out.
Success at summer school requires different things to succeed. Firstly each student must put aside any issues they have and commit. Once that is done you need to work very hard to get through the workload. You also must persevere until you break through in areas which you find hard to understand. You also have to come to school while your friends are going to the beach. Doing this does take a lot of grit and determination, as well as a great deal of hard work.
I am very proud to look out at the graduating Class of 2016 and see a group who have worked so very hard to succeed. I am sure at the start of summer school you could have thought of many things you would rather be doing. However you really have pushed yourselves over the summer. I hope you feel very satisfied with yourselves. I am delighted to be here to honor your achievements – well done class of 2016.
I must take this opportunity to thank the teaching team. They are committed to your success and work very hard to ensure you get all the help you need.
There is a great quote which I think gives a flavor of the importance of the perseverance you have all shown and the strength that your summer will give you:
“ Life is a series of experiences, each of which makes us bigger, even though it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and griefs which we endure help us in our marching onward.”
By Henry Ford
I hope you use this experience to propel you forward in a life full of much more success earned through your own hard work. I rarely say this, but I do believe this Class will go on to great things as you now know you have the strength of character to tackle ever greater challenges.
