Signpost what your speech is about and get them ready to hear you out.
Write a brilliant ending.
Leave the audience in no doubt you are ending the speech.
Give the audience an emphatic ending reinforcing your key points and wish them all the best for the future.

Principal Strain, Civic Dignitaries, Holmes, Nelson and Farr
First off, congratulations to the Class of 2008.
We are graduating today and I feel very proud to be part of The Given High team.
We are undeniably from a less privileged area than many others. In fact Social Economic studies tell us that we are in the bottom 20%.
I know there are some challenges in our school funding and we have to make do without some materials.
I know we all face some issues in our neighbourhood with safety.
However, I know more than anything we are proud to be from Givens and are very proud to be graduating from our High School.
There are lessons for everyone in how Givens has brought us up, treated us, educated us and given us respect for ourselves, and each other.
For example, I expected to attend math class, perhaps not everyday, and just put my time in till I could leave.
Was I wrong!
There I ran into the most polite little lady, Mrs Carr. I thought she would be soft and not keep discipline.
Was I wrong!
If ever there is a teacher who showed leadership, grit, determination, all done in a polite way, it is Mrs Carr.
She has pulled every imaginable trick to get us at first interested in Math, then good at it and now excellent graduates.
Why would she care -- well she just does.
We were all inspired by how our forefathers were great mathematicians.
She proved we had a gift.
She showed we could pass tests.
When we were going off track she came to our homes and taught us what we had missed.
All on a teachers pay - staggering!
From Mrs Carr I have learned :-
There is good in all of us.
Believe you can do most anything.
Persist and you will break through the mental barriers that you yourself erect. Those barriers stop you learning.
Once you achieve build on that success time and again. Success is an adrenaline fuelled ride to the top!
If you had to ask me what I would aspire to when I left High School before Mrs Carr I would have said I don’t think it will amount to much.
Now like many graduates I have the belief, skills, persistence, and desire to go for further education.
I will be learning to be a Math professor, that is my dream!
For me education has been my salvation.
In the future I hope to give others the opportunity to do the same.
Thank You Mrs Carr.
Also big thanks to our Principal and the fearless fund raising team.
Thank you to all the teaching staff.
Thank you to everyone here for your support on our journey together.
I will always be a child of our neighbourhood, so please keep in touch!
For the future I would say get out there, keep learning and believe you can achieve.
Your journey has just begun.
I leave you with a quote By Ruth Westheimers :
My favorite animal is the turtle.
The reason is that in order for the turtle to move, it has to stick its neck out.
There are going to be times in your life when you’re going to have to stick your neck out.
There will be challenges and instead of hiding in a shell, you have to go out and meet them!
Best of Luck

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2008.
I am very proud and honoured to be here before you today. There is an enormous sense of excitement on graduation day and I am sure you can all feel it today.
I had heard college graduation speeches before at my brothers graduation day, but I never imagined I would be here with you today delivering my own version of college graduation speeches.
Firstly thanks to my family, you have given so much and I appreciate your love and support. I love you too.
Thanks to the Principal and staff at Simpsons college, what can I say? I am sure we have not always been easy to deal with but you pulled through for us. I know how much of yourselves and your time.
Thanks to my close friends and fellow students. You are a magnificent group of talented people. The fun in being here has been in knowing all of you.
As you know the college has a work placement program. My placement happened to be in Maldini architects. I dearly want to be an architect, you have no idea how excited I was to be placed there!!
I loved my time at Maldini and did indeed learn enough to know that it is my passion. I could not sleep at night, I was just so excited to be an architect for a short while!
You have no idea how devastated I was to be called in for a chat with Mrs Maldini after a few days with what looked like it was going to be bad news.
In the end that meeting was to define me as a person.
Mrs Maldini said she loved having me in the office as I was bright and fun, then told me I was leaving that day unless I shaped up. My heart sank!!!
The reasons were true, simple and painful.
I was still too much of a college student, I thought life was just fun!
I wanted to be liked rather than do a job.
I was time wasting, costing money and not doing what I was asked.
Could I recover from this devastating news?
Mrs Maldini Looked at me straight and told me I needed to decide what my own codes of conduct were. I then needed to take responsibility for living up to them.
I had to return the next day with all this written out and ready to act on it, if not NO JOB.
As you can imagine my first instinct was to complain about Mrs Maldini to my friends but I just did not have the time.
When I got home I kept thinking about what my family have held up as their codes of conduct and thought how that might help.
The codes are:
Always give your best.
Persevere with a smile on your face.
Always help others.
I thought deeply about how I had gone astray.
My best was most definitely not being given. I did my best getting the placement and I needed to work out what my best for Maldini’s was.
I looked at the work assignments and sorted out what I would do.
I was not persevering as I was not focussed on the job. The next day I promised myself that would change.
I thought I was helping others by being friendly and fun but that was not true.
I needed to change to what was best for Maldini which was to really help by giving high quality work.
I added more detail and nervously presented my plan the next day.
Mrs Maldini smiled and said she just wanted to see the plan in action with completed assignments. I had to work long hours to catch up and make my targets.
I learned fast that I alone was responsible for my actions.
I learned my actions affected other people.
I learned my positive contribution would help others.
So, I did my job and very luckily I will be returning to Maldini full time!!!
I urge you all to consider who you are, what your codes of conduct are and just how responsible you are for living up to them.
You are about to go off and seek fame and fortune. Be ready to do a good job right from the start!
You must look to yourself, your actions can affect the lives of others and indeed their employment prospects.
Write out your codes of conduct. Everyday check if you are living by them.
If you don’t live by your codes you will be found out.
I am sure all of you will have a glittering future ahead of you.
Have fun, follow your passion and be yourself at all times.
Good luck and congratulations!!!

Principal Ayella, Mrs Stein, Mr Fruin, Mrs Smith , fellow students and families.
Congratulations Class of 2008.
I am honoured to be giving the valediction today. This is a very special day for all of us and our families.
On behalf of the students let me welcome our friends and families. I hope you love the mountain setting.
I would also like to thank our families for just how much you have done for us. To love, support and nurture a child is something I won’t truly understand just how hard that is until I have my own children. However, mom and dad do it all without complaint - well not until I crashed the car anyway!
My family have moved home 10 times in 18 years. My dad’s job takes him all over the place . This is great as we have lived all over USA and Canada. I have surfed one week in California and been skiing the next in Colorado. I have seen more than I thought possible.
However the price, to me, has always been that I don’t settle in because I will soon be leaving. I have had little commitment to sports teams, friendships, school work or even making myself at home in the town. A hard thing to understand is those times when you need to commit to a friendship. You need to talk about tough things, deal with a bad argument and put each other first. I had not had to do that or indeed similarly commit to anything at all.
2 years ago we moved to Vancouver to stay. At first we did all the sea planes, biking in Stanley Park, Grouse Mountain, shopping, jogging along the harbor, swimming and all the other great things. Then I started to get a sense we were really staying put.
Even better the teachers and students here have gone out of their way to make me at home, make friends, ski, swim and very importantly catch up on all my school work.
I have to thanks my teachers for creating recovery plans and helping me get through new lessons too. Now we come to today and I feel unbelievably great. I have found my dream place to be, with amazing friends and academic success.
I want to thanks personally Mr Houston, Mrs French, Mr Joyce and every teacher.
I want to thank my friends and classmates. This is a great place to be!
Congratulations to all of you, you are stars!
So what could possibly be next?
I know many of you are leaving home for the first time to go to college and jobs. I will miss all of you but I know you will all do well. I also know you will come back. You will miss the friends, that Vancouver scenery, Stanley Park, pizza nights and the great outdoors.
Good luck to all of you.
The teachers will be here to guide another class successfully to graduation..
For me this is home. I am staying put to continue my education here.
From time to time I will send you photos of sunsets, trees, beach parties and skiing. You’ll be on the next lane home!
Good Luck

Principal Hatton, Mr Mayweather, Mrs Huth, Mrs Freil, Students and Families.
Congratulations Class of 2008.
First off let me welcome our families to our college. I am sure you had a vision of people who were rather untidy. I know my mom thinks we all cleaned up quite well for graduation day.
Let me thanks our families for their love, support and patience.
When I arrived here and moved into my dorm I remembered the words of one of the High School graduation speakers. She wanted us to:
Always face challenges head on.
Set and achieve tough goals.
Believe in yourself.
Work very hard and persevere.
Have fun along the way.
However I was also acutely aware of the very real fears, doubts and plain worries I had back then. I was experiencing a nervous feeling in the pit on my stomach that told me things had changed and I should be worried.
This was all too real at the time.
I then, as you all did, set about living with that fear and making my way through college.
My goals emerged after a few months as I got the measure of college and my abilities.
I was facing challenges everyday just being here. After a while that calmed down and I settled in to the hard work that goes with succeeding at college.
After some failures I started to get good grades and belief came with it.
M family are hard working by nature, so it was second nature to dig in.
I soon met some brilliant people and started to have fun along the way.
If I had handled the change with a greater sense of belief I would have been stronger all the way through college.
However we all made it in the end.
The support and skill of the teachers has been awesome. It is very much like family here and I have loved that part. Thanks to all of you!
Thanks too, to the support staff. The lunch team and cleaning crew are the best fun on campus!
So, congratulations to all of you.
Now we start the process of change again.
I know we are suppose to feel amazingly ready for the future:
All charged up and ready to take on any challenge.
Strong since we have succeeded here.
Totally ready to use the skills we have learned at college.
Focussed on new goals.
Sad to be leaving each other.
For me I am not at that point.
I am unbelievably sad to be leaving college and all of my close friends behind, but I know we will keep in touch.
I do feel a sense of real concern over the future. I am nervous about starting my job. I am concerned to know the future will work out.
But, Deep down inside me I know it will be OK.
I know I will keep facing challenges no matter what.
I know I will find focussed goals as my career emerges and I get into it.
I know I will work hard and use the skills we have learned.
I believe this is true for all of us.
I hope to see you all at the Beach party tonight.
Good Luck!

Purpose of student speeches for graduation: Outstanding memories.
Principal Orton, Mrs Flack, Mrs Robertson, Fellow Students and Families.
Congratulations Class of 2008.
I am honoured to be asked to speak at my college graduation day.
Firstly let me welcome our families and guests. You may have wondered where all your money had gone, well hopefully today you can celebrate and feel like it was all worthwhile.
I am truly thankful for the love and support you have given me all these years.
My grandfather once told me that you only remember big, amazing and outstanding events in your life. He said you should get out there and make brilliant memories everyday.
I did wonder what that old Scotsman was trying to tell me.
Looking back my memories are brilliant but perhaps not as plentiful as I would like.
I have the usual ones of my sisters wedding, graduating high school, learning to ride my bike, my first mountaineering success, my first date, moving to college and meeting my friends.
I too, have great memories of the help I have had and great teaching. Some of the more unusual teaching has turned out to be the lessons I remember the most. The tutoring help I had has always been just when I needed it. But more importantly I will remember how human the teachers are!
I will remember my friends and fellow students. As well as some standout parties there have been just brilliant times being together. I hope this lasts forever.
I will remember the college as it has great scenery, history, people and it is home!
What other memories would I have liked to have?
I think that would be playing soccer for USA, more family and friends parties, asking a girl called Christine for a date, going to the Alps for mountaineering, surfing in Hawaii and doing more for people who need me.
Graduation day, perhaps the most memorable day we have had so far. The culmination of years of hard work, effort by teachers, love and support from family and friends, and my little 2 weeks old nephew is here too, all celebrated in one memorable day. Congratulations again.
So back to Grandfather’s advice. What will I do to create memories as often as possible. Well, human ingenuity is boundless so we should be able to create great things. Why not, you will live each day anyway.
I hope to remember:
My first day at work.
Meeting my life partner
Going to Mont Blanc
Making $10000 for children who need it.
My first home and car.
Lots f memorable times with friends and families.
Starting and growing a successful business.
Having people in my company love their jobs.
And, I have not really started on my list yet.
I hope you take a moment today and write out your list. At our 15 year reunion we can compare our lists and how we have succeeded.
Good Luck!

Purpose of student speeches for graduation: How was the ride for you.
Principal Milton, Honored Guests, Fellow Graduates and Families.
Congratulations Class of 2008
Student Speeches for graduation are normally full of thanks and lots of love and celebration. In a sense my speech is no different, and yet I wanted to say something about the ride so far.
Starting with our families. My own family, the same as all your, have given me total love and support. I do love you guys and big hugs too. No matter what was going on in their lives they have been here for me.
My Dad says the ride for them has had a few bumps as I settled in at college, but not really the rollercoaster he expected. He says it has been fun watching me grow into an adult.
Next on to the teaching staff. Huge thanks to all of you. A staggering commitment from all of you!
Think back to some of or classes more difficult moments. The initial homesickness, going off the rails here and there, the late parties, panicked students with bad grades. Also the robbery, vandalism and car graffiti.
Intriguingly I asked the teachers how the ride was for them.
All of them said it was fantastic. That is not what I thought!
They say they had a clear goal in mind on getting the best they can out of us. Improving their teaching technique and helping us as much as they can. I checked back on what they thought of the problems. But they said they expected some issues. They felt it was a minor part of their lives that they can easily cope with.
Thanks to the teachers for being strong mature and excellent.
Talking to the students is different. We have some who see life as harsh, but most see it in a positive light. All of us appear to have had up and down moments. But we did all make it in the end.
Mostly we have enjoyed the ride. Interestingly all of us seem to view college as a bit of an adventure. Perhaps being away from home, surviving in the dorm and being alone at times has made it that way.
We students are all stronger, more mature and the better for it.
So lets enjoy today and move on into the party to have a great time. I am looking forward to seeing the dance moves later!
Looking ahead to the future is interesting.
There is no doubt some of us will have struggles at times. Coming back to the teachers, I have not yet mentioned the enormous amount of teamwork they have. The same within the student group. They have to pull together, anyone in trouble gets help from the others.
In the future we can take the rough with the smooth, focus on the end goal (not the obstacles), set out on the adventure and enjoy the ride, we can succeed!
Perhaps just as importantly as this list we can keep in touch, help each other and enjoy the ride together.
Please keep in touch through the college website and let us all know how the ride is for you over the years.
Good luck to everyone!!
