Homemade Photo Invitations - Handling Photos
Duplicate Photos
This information is applicable if you’d like to use pre-printed glossy photos on your graduation photo invitations. The easiest way to replicate your photo is by having re-prints made from your negatives, memory card or CD. However if you don’t have any of these then fortunately there are other methods.
Take a Picture of a Picture - Simply place your photo on a flat surface or tape it to a wall in bright even light (daytime is best), then focus and snap!
Color Copy Machines - This is the least expensive option. I like to use acid-free, 28 pound or heavier smooth white paper. Color photocopying is great for changing the size of the image. You’ll find these machines in office supply stores.
Please note that if you want to use a picture taken by a professional then you cannot take it to a copy store to be copied. They will reject it because they require a written waiver from the photographer. A 1976 law prohibits copying professionally created photographs. So simply call your photographer to obtain a one-time copy-right waiver for a small amount of money.
Scanning Photos - To scan your photos at home, use the TIFF file format for high-resolution images. The quality of your duplicate photos will depend on the quality of your scanner, scanning software, printer and photo paper you print on. If do-it-yourself scanning is not for you then a camera store can do this for you and put the images onto a CD.
This option provides you with a digital image that can be printed directly onto your photo graduation invitations.
Homemade Photo Invitations - Photo Tools
Photo Cutting/Crafting Tools
- If you want to use glossy photos on your photo graduation invitations rather than printed versions then “photo fingerprint cleaner” is ideal for – you guessed it – removing fingerprints.
- A photo-safe wax pencil is great for tracing cutting lines onto photos.
- A fine-grained sandpaper nail file is great for smoothing cropped, curved photo edges.
- A craft knife, cutting mat and metal ruler are essential.
Photo Printing Tools
If you want to print photos directly onto your announcement card then you'll need the following:
- Computer
- Printer
- Card
- Photo editing software
The photo editing software could be “Paint” which comes as standard on most computers. This will allow you to extract a specific part from a picture i.e. extract a picture of the graduate from a group photo.
Microsoft Picture Manager is also something that is part of the Microsoft Office suite of tools. This will let you resize your picture. Basically there are tools on the net that you can buy but it’s worth having a look around your computer first.
Photo Invitations - More Ideas
Have a think about the photo you would want to use. Deciding on the best photo is fun. Some good photos ideas:
- A traditional graduation photo with cap and gown
- Photos of the graduate through the years
- For a themed party photograph the graduate wearing party costume.
- A kindergarten graduate could be photographed holding their teddy bear, for example.
- Use a photo which was taken with a celebrity.
- If you are also making a thank you card in which case you can use a photo of the graduate using the gift.
There are many possible ways of setting up the graduation photo for the graduation invitations. I hope you find the one that is best for you.
More Ideas With Photos
There are a lot more photo crafts that you can create to make the party special.
- Graduation Announcements -In just the same way as you created a photo invitation, create announcements!
- Photo Puzzles - Simply print the photo on cardstock and cut up the invitation in a shape, or jigsaw shape, that you wish.
- Save The Date Magnets - A good way of doing this is to take a photo of the graduate holding a card with save the date and the party details on it. Print out the photo and attach it to card. Then put a magnetic strip on the back.
- Photo Guestbook - Take a photo of each guest as they arrive. At the same time ask each guest to write a message on the bottom of a card.
Later attach their photo to the card and bind the cards together with ribbon.
- Shadow Box - Print off your graduation photo and attach to the back of a shadow box. Attach a fun momento such as a dried flower, a tassel or a mini scroll.
- Photo Place Flags - If you have time, a fun way to identify each person's place at the table is to use a photo.
Take a photo of ecah guest as they arrive and print off. Attach the photo to a place card or a popsicle stick (to make it look like a flag).
- Photo Centrepiece - Themed on the graduate, use a large graduation photo and attach it to card. Use this as part of the centrepiece.
- Balloon Tags - Print out a grdauation photo of the graduate. Cut it into a circle and attach to balloon ribbon (for a helium balloon). Also cut out a same size circular piece of card with your message to the graduate. Could be as simple as well done or congratulations. These look great if you attach the balloon ribbon to the back of chairs.
- Photo Placemats - You may be able to get a photo shop or hardware store to take photos of the graduate , attach them to a placemat backing and laminate so they are safe for hot food.
- Photo Gift Wrapping - Using a large photo print, wrap the graduation gifts and finish off with ribbon.
- Lots More Ideas - In a similar way as photo graduation invitation, photos can be used for gift tags, penants, photo boxes, family trees, cookbooks, graduation cards and photo puzzles.
