Nerves

by Ian Martin
(Califironia)

I have a valedictorian graduation speech to give. I am happy with the written speech, flow, and language. However I am very, very nervous. What can I do.

In terms of preparing to give the speech:

Strong preparation can help calm nerves.

Practice, practice, practice. You may well end up knowing the speech without notes. You should though always use a full script.

If you have any sports type training imagine a picture in your mind of a successful speech seeing smiling faces and hearing applause.

Dress well, feeling sharp can help a little with confidence.

Visit the venue beforehand. It is good to know where the microphone is, where your notes will be placed and also how you will be standing.

Make sure your speech is typed in large letters so that you can read them with ease.

Make sure your speech has an opening that grabs the audience. As a student they will be with you anyway but some early congratulations and thanks for teachers and parents will be very well received.

During the speech speak slowly so that everyone can understand you and stay on side.

Good Luck.

Although very simple, I recommend you visualise yourself making a great speech, smiling, listening to the applause and feeling great.

Also, think back to other occasions when you have tackled big challenges and how nervous you were. Remember winning through and knowing you can do that any time.

OK To Have Nerves
by: Kayliegh

Remember we are all nervous as we approach graduation speeches. That can be the thing that drives you forward to preparing and working hard on the speech that you end up delivering a really good one. Trust yourself in that when you are fully focussed on something it will work out for you.

I have found myself overly nervous on the odd occasion. I always check that I feel I am preparing well enough. I also try and bridge the gap between me and the event. Mostly I talk to the organisers and reassure myself about the type of speech they usually have, the style of speaker, what tips they have and what the best past speakers have done. Standing in the venue helps too.

No need to let nerves hold you back!

Practice
by: Mary O'Donnel

I tried out my speech in front of a family and friends as well as practicing on my own.

Luckily the Principal had a rehearsal the night before graduation. That put me a bit more at ease with the surroundings and speaking in front of people.
