We are having a gathering (dinner) at a restaurant for a neighbor who is turning 80. We would like it if everyone knows that dinner is on their own. Any tips on how to word this graciously?

Our speciality is graduation so we cannot offer strict advice. Just a suggestion, you could word the cost as something to do with supporting the neighbor on their birthday.
