Galaxy

by Sheena McPherson
(Canada)

I am having a joint graduation party with 3 friends. The small local hall has been booked in case we lost the chance. I expect we will have 40 guests.

A Galaxy party theme has been chosen.

2 of us are avid Star Trek fans which would not suit everyone. After a fair bit of talking over possible graduation party ideas we have agreed a compromise.

We did think of booking a Planetarium but the nearest in Vancouver is too far away.

The decorations are built on black gossamer which will cover the walls. Using glow pens we have drawn planets and stars on some. One gossamer has star shapes cut out and will have back lighting to bring it to life. We also have an old disco ball painted as a planet.

Also star shaped balloons, silver streamers, and silver confetti.

We have bought lots of cheap posters on space, Apollo flights, planets and will put them up, with the right lighting.

Lighting generally is planned to be very subdued.

Guests are to get glow sticks and armbands.

We are on the lookout for space type toys from star wars, star trek and any other space film.

We have chosen a mix of dance music and film themes.

Invites have been made using galaxy style clip art and simple wording. Everyone must wear some galaxy item. Some will come as trekkies and we expect a Luke Skywalker.

The food is generally planned as a buffet. The cake is to be decorated as a galaxy. This needs more work as we need to at least try and find some fake space food.

Some further ideas might just help with the galaxy party.

Invitations

Add star confetti or star stickers to the envelopes. Perhaps you can use dark paper and add silver stars.

Guests should be able to dress as stars or other Galaxy party costume. You might allow Star Trek type characters. Alternatively they may wish to be astronomers.

Decorations

A Galaxy party offers lots of ways to go in terms of decorations.

  • There are Gossamers with stars on them that would make great additions to the walls.

  • You could decorate a blank Gossamer that is black to look like the sky at night.

  • Use lots of astronomy type pictures that identify planets and stars

  • You could display astronomy type equipment such as telescopes

  • You may be able to show on a large screen a Discovery channel show about the galaxy

  • Use star shapes along your driveway and also around the venue.

  • Hang balloons from the ceiling decorated as stars and planets

Favors can be simple thinks like books about the Galaxy or planet and star type jigsaw puzzles (which could glow in the dark). Also check out science stores for galaxy type favors.

Games could be things like name that planet or star constellation by looking at a picture.

Preparation for a Galaxy party should start early as you may end up making lots of the decorations yourself.

I like this idea as my kids love astronomy.

If you can find luminous paint you could have a banner made from an old bed sheet.

You could decorate with borrowed telescopes or pictures of famous telescopes.

Try pin the star in the galaxy.

A quiz could be on well know star patterns. Show a picture and ask which pattern it is.

Can you reduce all lighting and have glow pass the parcel.

You could buy a star named after each guest as a gift.

Not sure if there are glow balloons but they would be great.
