In fact starting with a strong basic version you can build a great speech reflecting the great occasion of your Graduation and suitably recognising the part everyone played in your life.

Most people rate speech making close to death in terms of how much they fear the event. However following a few simple rules and accepting that nervousness is just a part of the process can allow you to deliver a heartfelt college graduation speech.

• Prepare effectively. Write out a list of people you want to thank. Add in any stories and jokes. Rewrite the speech a few times until you have a good version.
• If you can, think through whether you are wishing to inspire, entertain, or inform the audience. If you are a guest speaker it would be best to inspire the graduates.


• Think of any special messages you wish to leave in people’s minds. If you have any, rewrite the speech including them at appropriate points.
• Use flawless English. Jargon and complex language may not be understood by the audience.


• The audience will appreciate relevant personal references.


• Start well with something that the audience will appreciate. This could be heartfelt congratulations to the Graduates and a welcome to their guests


• Go out with a bang. Leave the audience with a clear ending which confirms the message in your speech. Don't let the speech just end without warning!


• Check out the room so you can to be clear where you will be and feel comfortable with your surroundings.
• Check the audience just to be sure you don’t offend or indeed forget anyone.
• Practice it out loud a few times close to the day.
• If the audience don't laugh at your humor then just keep going, don't repeat the punchline.

First off thanks to Principal Mori, the wonderful teaching staff and support teams. You got us through this.

Congratulations to all of you on your graduation.

My own thanks too to my close friends and particularly my family.

Many of you know my own background has been from a poor but loving family in the inner city.

What was great about that was the survival instinct I have, the way I learned to understand danger, social problems, love and hatred and also amazingly the desire to succeed it has given me.

However when I came to college I was a still surviving on the streets in my own mind.

Believe me it took me a year just to let people get to know me and to open up to the staff and my fellow students. I thank you for your patience.

So, college has taught me to open up to new experiences, not judge things by past events and to be more human and approachable.

Why did that happen?

The college values are to respect others and give of your best.

I learned not only wonderful knowledge from the staff but also that they were honest, kind, caring and patient. Eventually that respect rubbed off on me and led me to having the most wonderful three years of my life.

College times are to be treasured forever.

However my new found respect for others did not take away my fire to succeed, nor my determination to help others who need us most.

Again, the college has been central to the effort to help others. We have raised tens of thousands of dollars for inner city kids education, we have been to Somalia to help build homes with water and sanitation, and we have helped local kids in hospital.

So, college has given us education, values, success and a will to do better.

Now we must go forward and use that learning in the most positive way we can, armed with a determination to succeed.

Free College Graduation Speech - Savor The Moment

Thank you to my parents and sister who helped me get to college in the first place. Also thanks to my teachers, mentors Susan Pritchard and Tom Conti, tutors Alf Waichi and Alberto Franz, and also the Principal Mr McKenzie.

Thanks also to my fellow students for your support and Tom, Ellie and Katie for being my close friends and confidants.

As we savor the very special moment that is Graduation it is appropriate to look back on the journey, recognise what this moment in time means and look forward to fabulous lives filled with promise and hope.

I have to say when I arrived at college I felt a bit out of place, homesick and ready to run back to mom. However after making the mistakes of not joining in, not trusting myself to do well and not being open to the great people and all this college has to offer I decided to make a go of it. I had always remembered my Scots Gran. When it rained and I complained about getting wet she used to say, “you are not made of sugar, so you won’t melt!” . This was her way of saying just get on with it, you will be fine.

From then on I steadily opened my self up to everyone, started to connect with great people, worked a lot harder and joined the debating team. From there on with a few bumps along the way I enjoyed life at college more and more.

I have found close friends, for life, and I am very proud of all of them.

I have also been inspired by my teacher, tutors and mentors. How many people do you know who can inspire you to learn the finer points of Math and actually love the experience?

To anyone starting out here I would say just relax into the way of life here, it is fantastic.

So now we students find ourselves on our last day here with a mixture of exhiliration at our success, sadness at what we are about to leave behind, and excitement and hope for the future.

Graduation is the culmination of our dreams, achievement of our goals, result of our hard work and dedication, and a fitting tribute to all those who have taught, mentored and supported us along the way.

I feel very sad to be saying goodbye to everyone. You have all been my life for a long time and I will definitely be in touch.

College has instilled in us a sense of pride in our achievements and a humbleness that without giving to others it is not a full life. College has sharpened our minds, educated us to a very high standard and given the values of trust, integrity and hard work that will propel us through the rest of our lives. To tell an employer that you attended this college will open doors and they will know what you stand for.

Looking ahead to the future as we stand at this new dawn I quote from Elton John’s Circle of Life:

I am honoured to be here today at this beautiful campus. I spent years admiring the mountain backdrop and the gorgeous lake when I was student here.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES OF GLASTON COLLEGE!!!!

My purpose in speaking to you today is to recognise the fantastic achievements you have ALL made In graduating. I wish also to look to the future and see where this journey through life can take you.

All of you have made your own life successfully so far with an outstanding contribution from the college staff. That is something to be very grateful for. From here on you get to use the fantastic skills you have learned but it is up to you to make the absolute best of your future endeavours.

I still remember graduating although it was 20 years ago. I felt full of unstoppable joy and optimism. I loved so many friends, I was sad to say goodbye, but I was also just so ready to take on the next challenge.

You have a wonderful , powerful, amazing tool at your disposal. There is nothing that can compare to it. It is many, many times more powerful than any computer. Most use only 2% of it.

By this I mean your brain.

Your brain if properly nurtured, challenged, fed and watered will propel you through a lifetime of success.

So how can you drive forward to a successful future using this mega computer.

First, your brain needs knowledge as much as food. You can learn awesome amounts of stuff if you do it well and are committed. Great if you are doing what you LOVE!

Your brain forms little neural pathways as you learn new knowledge, adding to what you know, and grows like a muscle.

Imagine being really keen on your task, or job, and just locking this amazing learning power on the subject. You will be unstoppable.

Also your brain is born to persevere. It can keep going and never give up on a goal.
Perseverance is the engine room of success.
Amazingly you can persevere brilliantly.

Add this power of perseverance to awesome learning potential plus a goal you are committed to in an area you just love and you are on the way to fantastic success.

Your brain loves to tell the truth. Hard to imagine when you consider politicians but it is true.

Either something has to happen to prove you wrong or your brain will keep saying this is not happening. Your motivation is low, learning poor and negativity prevails.

Better to set a positive, challenging and achievable goal. As you go you can adjust the goal upwards.

Again imagine you love the topic, you believe in the goal, you know you will persevere and be absolutely excited about learning. How unstoppable would you be then.

Everyday you woke up you would have a real zest for life and the challenges you face.

But there is more, as I have already said you are born to succeed.

As you succeed you feel fantastic, your energy levels rise and you seem physically and mentally better.

Each success spurs you on to more and more success.

But, what do you say if things go wrong. Well I don’t see it that way. I see only a trial with and event and feedback. Get you mind to work on adjusting your approach and go again!

Thomas Watson, of IBM fame, said - If you want to succeed, double your failure rate.

So now imagine you have a real commitment to a great job, a series of very challenging but achievable goals broken down into regular deliverables, you love learning everything required, you persevere and are achieving each goal as you wanted.

Just how unstoppable would you be then!

My message is, you have everything you need to succeed. You can look forward to an outstanding future by using your brain as intended. You need not fear the future.

Principal Morton, Honored guests Mary Boyle and Hugh Grant, graduates and families.

Let me firstly enjoy saying Congratulations Class of 2010.

I believe you are the best class of your generation. Reports from the teaching staff show you are the best group the college has had for a long, long time. The college excels in the studies of management, business, marketing and accounting, which all do seem like difficult subjects. I know from speaking to the student committee last night just how hard you have worked to get to graduation and how hungry you are for success. However, although life has lots of reality checks for all of us, it is important to look at the journey you have taken to get to this point. I understand fully how hard it is to actually graduate from this college, where standards are so high. I feel from talking to the student group that you have had to work a lot harder than my class did to graduate. You also have the benefit of a continually improving teaching team and methods. Indeed my own company has taken many students over the years and I agree you are a very talented group. Add to that the great feedback and mentoring you get these days, then the recipe for success is completed by hard work, perseverance and enthusiasm. I do love to see lots of enthusiasm. So, I stand here in admiration before a highly educated and much more successful group then I ever was. In so many ways I feel your passion for life, learning and succeeding is perhaps the real thing to take forward.

Congratulation once again.

I very much hope you have the same passion for the graduation party. You thoroughly deserve to be out having the time of your lives.

In a few days time you will be ready to go off and make a fantastic life for yourselves. I know some of you are feeling a little unsure about the future. Faced with difficult economic circumstances it can be unsettling, however I hope you see it as an enormous opportunity to make a real difference. When I left here I was determined to start my own company. I was not as well educated, positive or directed as the Class of 2009. But I was determined and very, very passionate about my golf company. So, although I had a few handicaps I had passion for my venture. Once again we come to that vital ingredient which is passion. Any one of your class, or even better a team from the class, would be able to out think, work faster, work harder, learn their business faster, and control their destiny better than I did. But history shows that few of you will end up going forward with passion. That is nothing to do with your skills, it is just about taking some time to find your passion and plan what to do about it. Remember I am not comparing you to anyone else’s success. Many take the easy comparison of success which is cars, houses, money and status. However over the years I have come to realise it is really about finding your passion and making it happen. My brother is the most enthusiastic teacher you will ever meet, yet he has little financial reward. Does he count himself as a success - you bet he does!

I hope the path you follow is one filled with everything you want it to be.
